The clearing of 'cache' doesn't affect your game downloads and is certainly going to improve the graphics processor speed if you haven't done any kind of clean-up in a few years of game use on your xbox360.

This will also reduce the wear-out time of your disc drive and reduce the possibility of disc corruption from mainly repeated continuous use and overheating of the disc surface.

Scratches on your disc are a secondary problem but are not generally a cause of corrupt data because you are dealing with a very fine layer of printed (stamped) content that is vulnerable mainly to heat.

On the contrary, you could put your Xbox360 in a fridge and it will work far better than at room temperature, as the internal working temperature can be around 60C., and that's not too hot for the operating system. But the disc being slightly insulated within the drive bay will eventually rise to that temperature for long periods of game play (3hrs+). The plastic being resistant to above that temperature, the print material however, becomes unstable and kind-of starts to float on the disc surface. It is stuck like glued on but it expands due to the material becoming heated. This causes distortion in the most minute fraction but the read quality is disrupted and will eventuate in skipping or lock-up of the frame read rate to the GPU and return an error.

If you get a blank screen or the system locks up during play it can only one of 3 things. The disc or the drive or the graphics processor. The graphics processor is unlikely to fail so you'd check the drive with other game discs to determine the error or borrow a machine to test the game disc.
The GPU will fail only if it is overheating and you will get an error message on screen to tell you that its onboard on your Xbox360.

BF3 will lock-up as I have tested its vulnerability for long periods of play just using the disc in the drive bay. BF# requires extensive use of the GPU when loading content and recording configuration of multi-player sets. If you expect to play for periods longer than I mentioned you should DL the game as their are specific problems with the read speed on certain maps for online play.

EA has fixed many of the original issues in their Premium DL content but there are still some aspects that make the game slow and slaves the GPU on your Xbox360. If you can't really afford the space on your HDD you might look at adding an external micro-drive to help you parallel the added content expansion of online gaming, as this are is going to increase dramatically over the next year or so knowing that other formats (Bluray) don't do any better to fix GPU processing in the Xbox360.
